ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Archaeological Museum of Chios is located in the town of Chios and is housed in a building that was specifically constructed for this purpose in the late 1960s. It contains remarkable collections of prehistoric and historical artifacts.
More specifically, visitors can see finds from the British excavations at the sites of Agios Galas, Emporeio, and Fana. Most of the discoveries date to the prehistoric, Neolithic, and Classical periods. Among the most impressive exhibits are a prehistoric vessel from the 14th century BC excavated at Emporeio, geometric amphorae from the 8th century BC, and gold leaves discovered in a tomb of the ancient city of Chios.
BYZANTINE MUSEUM
The Byzantine Museum of Chios is housed in the Mecidiye Mosque (Mejidie Mosque). This Ottoman mosque, located in Vounaki Square, was built in the 19th century and has undergone several restoration and conservation projects over the years.
The museum features an important collection of sculptures from the Early Christian, Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman periods. Visitors can also admire a significant collection of post-Byzantine folk-art sculptures. Particularly interesting are the Jewish funerary plaques, old cannons, handmade ceramics, and folk-art wood carvings. One of the museum's highlights is its collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons.
MARITIME MUSEUM
Chios is renowned throughout Greece for its long maritime tradition. The Maritime Museum of Chios is housed in the mansion of Anastasios and Marouko Pateras, located in the center of the town. The building was donated by the charitable foundation bearing their name.
The museum's primary objective is to showcase one of the most important aspects of life on the island by collecting artifacts and historical records related to Chios' maritime heritage. Through engravings and miniature models, visitors can also trace the development of merchant ships over time.
The museum's exhibits include portraits of sailing and steam-powered vessels owned by Chian shipowners, navigational instruments, ship models from various historical periods, and a collection of rare photographs depicting maritime life.
IOUSTINIANI EXHIBITION
The Ioustiniani Exhibition is housed in a historic building located near the main gate of the Castle of Chios. The building dates back to the 15th century and was restored during the 1980s.
The exhibition includes Byzantine frescoes and icons, sculptures, and wood carvings. Particularly noteworthy are the Early Christian mosaics, which are among its most valuable exhibits.
