Located at the entrance of Korissia (the port of Kea), the Enamel and Metallurgy Factory is one of the most significant monuments of industrial archaeology in the Cyclades.
Foundation & Heyday: It was founded in 1927 by Ioannis Gleoudis. It was the only factory in Greece specializing in the production of enameled (saucepan/cookware) household utensils and metal signs, while in 1936 it also produced military supplies (canteens and mess kits). At its peak, it employed around 300 workers.
The Closure: The factory permanently shut down in 1957 due to financial difficulties and the rise of new competitive materials in the market, such as plastic.
Today: Although the building remains inactive, it stands as the trademark landmark of the port. Thanks to the efforts of the "Friends of the Enamel Factory Association", a large collection of authentic machinery, tools, and utensils has been preserved and is exhibited in a municipal space on Kea, keeping the island's industrial heritage alive.
