The Holy Monastery of Agioi Pantes (All Saints) in Spetses is one of the most significant spiritual, historical, and religious centers on the island. It is built in a privileged and tranquil location, high on a hill overlooking the town of Spetses and the port of Dapia. Its position offers a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Argosaronic Gulf, the coasts of Ermionida, and the endless blue sea, creating an environment of absolute devotion, serenity, and isolation from the cosmopolitan life of the island.
The history of the monastery is inextricably linked to the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and the modern history of Spetses. It was founded around 1830 by the Spetsiot ascetic and teacher Sophronios, on the ruins of an older church. During the national liberation struggle, the area and the predecessors of the church served as a refuge for freedom fighters and their families, while the monastery itself became a beacon of hope and spiritual support for the locals. Today, it functions as a convent, with the nuns keeping alive the traditions, the rich library, and the historic heirlooms of the site.
The architecture of the monastery follows the traditional island style, featuring whitewashed walls, stone courtyards filled with flowers, and well-maintained cobblestone paths. The catholicon (main church) of the monastery is dedicated to All Saints, and inside, visitors can admire remarkable Byzantine icons, an exquisitely crafted wood-carved iconostasis, and historical offerings from the great seafaring families of Spetses. Access to the monastery can be gained either by hiking up a beautiful uphill trail or by using a local means of transport (taxi or horse-drawn carriage), offering visitors a unique opportunity for spiritual uplifting and a chance to discover the authentic, religious side of Spetses.
