Poros is a beautiful, lush green island in the Saronic Gulf, located just a stone's throw away from the coast of the Peloponnese. It actually consists of two islands separated by a small sea channel: the peaceful Kalavria, which is the larger of the two and covered in dense pine forests, and the smaller, volcanic Sphaeria, where the island's picturesque capital town is built.
The ultimate landmark of Poros is its historic Clock Tower, built in 1927 on the highest peak of Sphaeria's hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the narrow sea passage and the opposite shores of Galatas. Poros town is filled with neoclassical buildings, narrow alleys, and a lively waterfront promenade packed with cafes and traditional tavernas. Key historical sights on the island include the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon (6th century BC) in Kalavria, where the great orator Demosthenes sought asylum and died, as well as the historic Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi.
The island boasts excellent and easily accessible beaches, including Askeli, Megalo Neorio, and the famous Love Bay (Limanaki tis Agapis), where pine trees stretch all the way down to the water's edge. Thanks to its close proximity to Athens (about 1 hour and 15 minutes by hydrofoil from Piraeus) and the option to reach it by car via a short boat crossing from Galatas, Poros is a highly popular destination for both weekend getaways and longer summer vacations.
