Syros holds an entirely unique position among the Aegean islands, serving as the official administrative capital of the Cyclades. Standing in stark contrast to the typical rural or tourist-centric imagery of other Cycladic islands, Syros surprises visitors with its strong urban character, its rich industrial and maritime history, as well as the unique coexistence of its Orthodox and Catholic communities.
Ermoupoli, the island's capital, is a living architectural museum. It was built during the Greek War of Independence by refugees from Chios, Psara, and Crete, rapidly evolving into one of the country's largest commercial hubs. The town is filled with impressive neoclassical mansions, marble-paved streets, and commanding buildings, highlighted by the Syros Town Hall on the central Miaouli Square-designed by the celebrated architect Ernst Ziller-and the iconic Apollo Theater, which is a miniature version of La Scala in Milan. In the aristocratic Vaporia district, the captain mansions seem to literally hang right above the sea.
In contrast to neoclassical Ermoupoli stands Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic settlement that crowns one of the town's two hills. With its narrow, fortified alleys, countless stone steps, and traditional Cycladic architecture, Ano Syros offers a breathtaking view of the harbor and is deeply connected to Markos Vamvakaris, the "patriarch" of Rebetiko music. Syros also features beautiful, family-friendly beaches such as Galissas, Finikas, Delagrazia (Posidonia) with its historic estate villas, and Agathopes, while it is famous for its traditional products, such as Syrian loukoumia and chalvadopites.
