About Pelion

Pelion, the striking peninsula of the Magnesia prefecture, is a place of rare natural beauty where the verdant mountain seamlessly meets the deep blue of the sea. According to Greek mythology, this mountain was the summer residence of the Olympian Gods and the homeland of the legendary Centaurs, most notably the wise Chiron, who tutored great heroes such as Achilles, Hercules, and Jason. Pelion's geography creates a stunning combination of dense chestnut, beech, and plane forests that give way to rugged cliffs facing the Aegean Sea on one side, and calm, sheltered bays along the Pagasetic Gulf on the other.

The region's identity is deeply intertwined with its 24 traditional villages, which preserve the unique Pelion architecture featuring stone mansions, arched bridges, and cobbled paths (kalderimia). Each village is organized around a central square shaded by centuries-old plane trees, where traditional fountains gush crystal-clear water and local taverns serve authentic delicacies. Pelion's rich history is also reflected in the economic and cultural bloom it experienced during the Ottoman occupation, during which it remained virtually autonomous and functioned as a major center for education, literature, and commerce.

Today, Pelion stands as a premier year-round destination, perfect for both winter getaways and summer vacations. Visitors can wander through cosmopolitan villages like Portaria and Makrinitsa (known as the "balcony of Pelion"), enjoy nature in mountainous Tsagarada, or experience the magic of a ride on the historic steam train (Moutzouris) that connects Lechonia with Milies. On the eastern side, beaches like Mylopotamos and Agios Ioannis captivate visitors with their emerald waters, while in the winter, the ski center at Chania offers the unique experience of skiing with a view of the sea. The local culinary tradition, featuring the famous spetsofai (a hearty sausage and pepper stew) and traditional spoon sweets, completes a rich travel experience.
