HISTORY
Castle of Oria, Kythnos The Castle of Oria or Katakefalo Castle is located in the northern part of the island, near Chora (Kythnos). It was the medieval capital of the island during the period from the 7th century AD until the 16th century. According to local tradition, the Castle was captured by invaders, which is not documented by historical sources. The content of the relevant local traditions echoes beliefs of older legends, scattered throughout the Greek territory.
Kythnos. The small island of west Cyclades-according to archaeological findings-is inhabited since Mesolithic Age.
As first settlers of the island are mentioned Driopes, whose king was Kythnos, from whom the island was named. In archaic times the island distinguished for the way it was administrated. Characteristic is the phrase “Kythnion State” used by Aristotelis to show the perfect governance of the island.
Following the rest of Cyclades islands, Kythnos, suffered a lot of conquerors. During history, Macedonians, Romans and Byzantines dominated the island.
In 1207 Kythnos is governed by Venetians and in 1537 by Turkish.
In the Revolution of 1821, Kythnos helped with all her powers. It was adjusted to Greece in 1832.
