Historically, Varkiza has been inhabited since ancient times. Excavations in the wider area have revealed cemeteries from the Geometric period, as well as remnants of ancient settlements including roads, houses, and walls. Of particular interest is the Cave of the Nymphs, which served as a place of worship in antiquity and is located northwest of the Evelpidon School.
