GREECE / EPIRUS / PREVEZA / PREVEZA TOWN
Preveza town
Preveza is the capital of the eponymous regional unit of Epirus. It is a beautiful and cosmopolitan city with a distinctly island-like character that captivates its visitors. Located at the tip of the peninsula at the entrance of the Ambracian Gulf, it occupies a strategic position at the center of northwestern Greece¢s coastline.

Historically, the first reference to the city under the name Preveza dates back to 1292. The modern city was founded at the end of the 11th century by inhabitants of nearby Nikopolis following its abandonment. The wider Preveza region has been inhabited since ancient times and has experienced periods of prosperity and decline, being ruled by Goths, Bulgarians, Venetians, and Turks. Each left its mark on the cultural development of the area. The significant historical monuments in the region reflect this rich and diverse past of Preveza and Epirus in general.
The city flourished during the rule of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, when castles were built and numerous infrastructure projects were completed, many of which still define the city today. The region was liberated from Ottoman rule in 1912, when all of Epirus was incorporated into the modern Greek state.

During your stay in Preveza, be sure to visit the three Venetian castles: Pantokrator, Agios Andreas, and Agios Georgios. You will be impressed by their imposing architecture and have the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the city. Don¢t miss photographing the Clock Tower, located in the city center, a Venetian monument and iconic symbol of Preveza. Of course, a visit to the archaeological site of Nikopolis is essential. Just 5 km from Preveza, this ancient city flourished in the 3rd century BC. Excavations have revealed city walls, a Roman house with mosaic floors, the Odeon, and the nymphaeum of the Roman aqueduct. The site also includes six Byzantine churches with rare mosaic floors.

Near Preveza, you will find many beaches ideal for swimming and water sports. Notable beaches include Kiani Akti, Psathaki, and Agioi Apostoloi on the Ambracian Gulf, and Alonaki, Kalamitsi, and Monolithi on the Ionian Sea.

Preveza offers a wide range of entertainment options to suit all tastes. Taverns, restaurants, cafes, bars, and nightlife venues abound, offering locals and visitors enjoyable experiences. The city also provides hotels of all categories and rental accommodations, ensuring a comfortable stay with modern amenities for an unforgettable holiday.
