GREECE / NORTH - EAST AEGEAN / LESVOS / PETRA
Petra
Petra is a beautiful seaside village that has developed into a popular tourist resort.
It is located in the northern part of Lesvos, 57 km from Mytilene, and serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name.
The village stands out for its natural beauty and well-developed infrastructure.
Particularly impressive is the traditional architecture of the settlement, with well-preserved old houses spreading around a massive rock from which the village takes its name.
At the top of this rock stands one of the most important religious monuments on the island and undoubtedly the most significant landmark of the area.
This is the Church of Panagia Glykofilousa, built in the early 18th century.
To reach it, visitors must climb 114 steps carved into the rock.
According to local tradition, a ship captain once transported the icon of the Virgin Mary on his vessel, only to discover one night that it had disappeared.
He then noticed a mysterious light at the top of the rock, where he found the icon and decided to build the church.
Another important attraction of the area is the “House of Vareltzidaina.”
Built in the early 18th century, it has been declared a preserved monument and is a mansion of Macedonian architectural style, featuring elaborate woodcarving and painted decoration.
The name “Vareltzidaina” comes from its last owner, who lived there until her death in 1940.
Petra also boasts a wonderful beach.
Its sandy shoreline stretches for 3 km, while its crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming and water sports.
It is a well-organized beach offering all modern amenities, with facilities for water sports and seaside activities.
In Petra, you will find hotels of all categories.
During the summer months, the municipality¢s Cultural Center organizes the “Petrano Summer,” featuring cultural events and an exhibition of traditional products.
It is also worth attending the Sardine Festival, held every August at the picturesque harbor of Petra.
