GREECE / NORTH - EAST AEGEAN / LESVOS / AGIASOS
Agiasos
Ayasos is a picturesque village built at the foothills of Olympus, the highest mountain of Lesvos.
It is located in the southern part of the island, 28 km from Mytilene.
This beautiful mountain village, set in a lush green area, enchants its visitors.
The settlement of Ayasos, designated as a protected area, impresses with its unique architecture.
A stroll through the narrow cobbled streets offers unforgettable sights.
Well-preserved two-story houses with distinctive architecture, historic churches closely linked to the village¢s past, and hospitable locals always ready to provide valuable information about the area, complete this fairy-tale scenery.
A unique jewel of the area is the Byzantine Church of Panagia, dating back to 1170.
Inside, it houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary “Panagia Vrefokratousa,” believed to be the work of the Evangelist Luke.
It was brought to the island in the early 8th century by the monk Agathon from Jerusalem.
The Byzantine icons that adorn the church also depict a significant part of the island¢s Byzantine history.
Within the church complex, there is an ecclesiastical museum displaying rare religious relics and a folklore museum exhibiting works of folk art and everyday objects of traditional local life.
As you explore the area, you will be captivated by the stunning landscapes.
Lush expanses of pine, plane, and chestnut trees, flowing streams, and colorful flowers create a living masterpiece before your eyes.
On Kasteli Hill, at an altitude of 600 m, you will enjoy breathtaking views, see the ruins of the Byzantine fortress, and visit the Church of Saint Prokopios, built in the 17th century, which houses notable Byzantine icons.
If you prefer the mountains over the sea, a stay in Ayasos will be unforgettable.
The village offers guesthouses that provide comfortable accommodation close to the magnificent nature.
